PA: Film - Actress 20's

Feinstein Films is currently seeing a non-union actress for the starring role in the film HIDE. The film already has worldwide DVD distribution secured and is shooting in late February in the Pittsburgh, PA area. This is a low budget shoot and everyone is working for deferred payment, copy and credit. Must have transportation to Western PA if cast. Filming will take approx. 3 days and will be a Friday-Sunday period.
The role we're casting is:
Melinda Sanders - Late teens to early twenties, Melinda is a carefree city girl who wants to prove to her friends that she's capable of spending a weekend roughing it in the mountains. A weekend of fun turns into a night of terror when a wild man attacks their cabin. Melinda battles the attacker, fighting for her life as he tries to abduct her. She's a strong character, doesn't give up easily, and isn't the typical "scream and wait for a man to come help" you often see in horror movies.
This role requires fully nudity so please only apply if that is something you are okay with(it will be shot on a closed set). The role of Melinda also requires light stunt work. It is a very intense role and the actress needs to be able to convincngly convey terror and fear. Similar recent films to HIDE would be "Wolf Creek"
and "Hostel".
Please apply via email with a photo and resume.
Many thanks,
Laraine Feinstein

Bush, and—we can pray—might one day be again.” —Observer (London). “What Edgar has to say is breathtakingly timely. CONTINENTAL DIVIDE is theater as salt lick. You lap it up.” —NY Times. “Heady, impassioned and unfalteringly politically engaged…as exciting in ambition as it is penetrating.” —San Francisco Chronicle.
THE CONTROVERSY OF VALLADOLID by Jean-Claude Carrière, English version by Richard Nelson“Jean-Claude Carrière’s fierce attack on [the Catholic Church] for its policies on human slavery makes for a refreshing change. Although based on a Spanish papal tribunal of 1550, Carrière’s stern historical drama hits a resounding contempo note with its revelations of how the church agonized over its ultimate conclusion that indigenous American natives were children of God after all—after invading their land, destroying their culture, plundering their natural resources and subjecting thousands of people to servitude, torture and death.” —Variety.
MANUSCRIPT by Paul Grellong“A twisty dark comedy about ambition and ruthlessness, with a fancifully elaborate Hitchcockian revenge plot up its sleeve.” —Variety. “Schemes, double crosses, literary ambitions and cool, calculating manipulation: MANUSCRIPT is like Deathtrap for the prep school set…enough plot twists to keep the audience guessing and engrossed.” —NY Newsday. “A wonderfully entertaining comedy filled with crisp, witty dialogue…never misses a beat…the characters exchange one zinger after another while plotting their deception.” —A.P. “Hip, witty and wholly unpredictable.” —Time Out.
MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS by Ron Hutchinson“An affectionate portrait of the legendary movie producer David O. Selznick and his collaborators…a lot of fun…dispenses a good deal of insider’s dope on the professional and personal dynamics that fueled the production [of Gone with the Wind]…plenty of genuine wit in the dialogue, and the characters are drawn with such affection that one can’t help but cheer for them.” —NY Post. “…a Hollywood dream-factory farce…At once a hyperventilating slapstick comedy, an impassioned love song and a blazing critique of Hollywood…just when you think it’s all fun and games…[Hutchinson] turns the tables…he has a gift for enveloping you in blackness. And then, with a single line…he also can lift the heavy cloud and get on with the hilarity.” —Chicago Sun Times.
SAILOR'S SONG by John Patrick Shanley From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of DOUBT comes an extravagant romantic seaside story decorated with dance. “…represents life’s more alluringly exotic possibilities.” —NY Times. “Shanley pursues some tough and intelligent themes.” —NY Newsday.

Acting FAQ - Demo Reels

ACTING CAREER FAQ - Demo Reels De-Bunked by Bob Fraser
(Excerpted from January 2006 issue of Bob's free newsletter for actors -- Show Biz How-To)
One of the questions I am frequently asked at my Show Biz U events is this one: 'What should I put on my demo reel?'
Here’s the short answer: The only thing you should put on your demo reel is acting work (on film or
tape) that you’ve been paid to do.
The biggest mistake I've seen being made, with regard to demo reels, is the inclusion of work under the AWFF contract.
AWFF, for those of you who don't know, is Actors Work For Free. (Sometimes called, Actors Work For
Food.)
Productions under this 'contract' are frequently inadequate when it comes to delivering what one might call a professional final product - from which you can excerpt that helpful 23 seconds of footage you desperately need for your demo reel.
Amateur footage on your reel can hurt you a lot more than it can help you – with casting people and directors and producers - who, in the main, are looking for professional actors someone else has already hired (for money).
It just makes good business sense.
Why should I be the first one to hire an untried, experimental, new, actor?
Bottom line? As a producer, I simply want a pro. Why?
Because my money's going out the door rather quickly and I don't really have time to 'bring someone along.'
So, your assignment, should you decide to accept it, is to get as much paid work as you can.
When they are actually paying you to act, you have an exponentially improved chance of getting an adequately lit, properly recorded, and decently photographed piece of footage.
Believe me, that stuff counts.
If your footage looks amateurish, pros will dismiss it ... and all who participated. Especially you ...
since you asked them to look at it.
Is dismissal the result you want? I didn't think so.
The second most frequently asked question on this subject is this: 'What do I do if I don't have any professional footage?'
Answer: Don't waste your time trying to put a demo reel together.
And, for goodness sake, don't spend 100's of hours of your precious time trying to get that elusive (and quite infrequent) lucky bit of footage from an AWFF production.
You're better off spending those 100's of hours, marketing your acting business to the people who can help you; casting directors, agents, directors, producers, et al.
Two weeks spent putting together an attractive, interesting, selling, post-card to send to casting directors, will most probably yield ten times the result ... compared to two weeks doing 'Amateur Night In Poughkeepsie' - wasting your time playing a misunderstood street-wise street-person in a badly written, self-important, disorganized, drama about a twenty-something film-maker ... who is coming of age ...
... on your dime! (AWFF contracts usually require you to come up with extra money out of YOUR budget.)
I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
In other words, it's probably a good idea to stop looking for short-cuts and loop-holes and start looking for acting jobs that pay.
After all, that's why you’re doing this, right?
Don't worry, you'll get your great demo reel ...
eventually.
Fact: No matter how wonderful technology becomes, it will never do the hard work part FOR you.
Now you know the reel deal.
P.S. If you have a reel, Judy Kerr, the author of Acting Is Everything, and Caryn West, a respected actress and coach have come up with an excellent resource about putting your reel online. You can download it for free at Judy's site:
http://www.judykerr.com
(The link is at the bottom right of the page.)
Also ... if you're in Florida ... be sure to read about Judy's upcoming workshop in Hollywood (FLA) on February 4th.
P.P.S. You can download a copy of my free monthly newsletter for actors, Show Biz How-To here:
http://www.showbizhowto.com/showbizhowtojan06.pdf
If you like it and you'd like to subscribe go to the old sign up page here:

But hurry. The bonus, The Hello Pages, will not be available after January 31st.
Have a great one and ...
Much Success,
Bob

Info on SAG Indie Payments

Dear Actors,
How great that Bonnie caught this, below, to clarify about when you get paid on SAG Indie Film work. Be sure to read the whole article she has included below.
Thanks, Bonnie.
Judy
(Here's what Judy wrote):
"The only exception for me would be SAG deferred projects.
You are not paid, but there is the promise of pay if the product gets distribution. I'm not saying that you can get the footage from those products or that they would be demo- reel worthy, but the possibility is there. I've always received my footage from the several AFI films I've done and they are resume clip online demo worthy."
http://www.judykerr.com
Bonnie responds ...
Hey Judy,
Just a super-clarifying point on the whole notion of 'promise of pay' issue and the low budget SAG agreements.
You didn't specify film length in your email, but I want to be sure it's clear that the SAG Experimental and SAG Limited Exhibition Agreements for feature-length projects are things of the past - along with back-end bumps.
There has been a major revamp of the SAG Indie Contracts (July 1, 2005) and there are no more automatic bumps upon distribution for unpaid acting work in feature-length projects.
Only if you've negotiated for a bump upon distribution under the SAG Ultra Low Budget agreement (the lowest-budget contract available for feature-length films) will you get money after the fact. There *are* residuals for cable, TV, and DVD sales, but not for theatrical distribution (unless specifically negotiated for and explicitly written up in a side-deal).
Only for the Short Film Agreement is there a bump to $100/day upon distribution, and that's for films under 35 minutes. So, if you're doing a SAG feature-length project, you're going to get that $100/day up front.
There's more info at the column I did on the revamped contracts here:
http://more.showfax.com/columns/avoice/archives/000260.html
I would recommend that actors take a look around the SAG Indie website to read up on the contracts
http://www.sagindie.com/contracts2.html
AND attend the next free contracts workshop:
http://www.sagindie.com/workshops.html
to get essential information on working under these agreements.
Again, I know that's not what your email was about, but it caught my eye and I thought I'd share the above details with you, just in case!
Cheers,
Bonnie Gillespie

Weekly Tip - Scott Powers

The New Year is here. So take a few minutes to play in the park in the cold and come back. Now’s the time to do a review of your career – a quick Tune-Update of the necessary components that make your career tick:

Headshots. Do they still look like you? In the current style? Color? Do you have enough? Are they reproduced in continuous tone at a quality repro lab?

Resume. Is it up to date? Does it look as professional as your headshots look? Trimmed to size and attached to your resume with double-sided tape.

Communications. Do you have a reliable voice mail/answering service/pager/cell phone? And always on – and your bill paid? Are you able to return phone calls within 60 minutes? Your competition can!

Finding your Way. Be sure to have maps: NYC, subway and bus. AND a well-fed Metro Card.
Your database of agents/managers/casting directors/photogs/production houses, etc. Is it current? Is it in a usable format to make records, print out labels, send out cover letters? Many computers come with such a program; we find ACT a good one to use.

Are you current on the latest “reference points” of our industry. (“I want a such-and-such type.”) This includes the latest styles and trends in commercial copy, episodic TV and movies. Yes, do some serious TV and movie watching. Agents, casting directors, managers and photographers do the same thing for the same reasons!

Appearances Count. How current and presentable is your wardrobe? A good wardrobe doesn’t have to cost a fortune – just choose wisely. And your body? Gotten a little flabby over the holidays? You know what to do! And good physical health helps make good mental health, too.

Who Loves You? How’s your support group/network working for you? Assess this with an objective eye. Go through your names piling up in your Outlook Express. It doesn’t hurt to clean house once in a while. Have a balanced life – and that includes “normal” activities and “civilians” in your life as well!

Attitude. Make it happy! Always ask yourself, “What kind of signals am I sending out?” Having the right attitude plays a much larger part in landing the job than many people realize.

Training. Are you current? You can’t get tomorrow’s jobs with yesterday’s training. And what about your Monologue(s)? Are they current? Do you even have a monologue? Do you have two contrasting ones? Remember -- that great monologue you’ve had for the last 5 years might not be the most representative of you today. Or do you need a good polishing up of what you have?

NOW is the best time to get started, that’s right – before the sun goes down.

Feature M/F

PERCEPTION - Non-Union Feature Film
PRINCIPALS:
CLARISSA - Female, caucasian, early 20s. Principled, charismatic, strong-willed and tough, but emotionally accessible. Cute, in an Ani Difranco kind of way. A photographer. Comfortable playing homeless/being dirty. Naturally pretty enough (no makeup or fancy hair), perhaps in an unconventional way, for beauty to shine through the grime of living on the streets.
RALPH - Male, caucasian, late 20s/early 30s. A driven, successful real estate professional. In good shape (not necessarily buff). Needs to be able to play the same role in 2 directions--play the scene once as a jackass and play it again as a nice guy.
TOBIAS - Male, mid to late 20s. An intellectual who feels caged by the world of capitalism. A writer and thinker, perpetual student who can't find his niche in the world. Very gentle and romantic, but possessing a lot of bottled up anger. Not necessarily handsome, but interesting to look at / looks that grow on you.
DAY PLAYERS:
THE MAN WHO INCHED - Male, 40-60, an aggressive subway rider, the kind of person who pushes in past people tryiho ng to get off of the train MOM - 45-60, loving, simple New Jersey mother. Likes to laugh.
DAD - Male, 45-60, nonjudgmental, trusting New Jersey father with a dry wit.
BARBARA - Female, 35-60, Clarissa's loud aunt, obnoxious and fun. 21 lines,
2 scenes
MCNEIL - Male, 40-55, powerful, cynical and ruthless businessman, fast-paced and sharply dressed. Smokes cigars.
PROFESSOR - Male or female, 35-60, a great and caring teacher, personable and intelligent.
SECURITY GUARD - Male, 25-45, slightly intimidating.
DOORMAN - Male, 30-60, friendly neighborhood doorman at luxury apartment.

STORY: One man walks into a party and sees the art on the walls, the books on the shelves, the bold color that the man by the window is wearing. Another man enters the same party at the same instant and sees the chandelier, the way a shadow falls through the back of a chair and casts bars of light onto the floor behind.
If asked to describe this same moment in time to a stranger, that stranger would no doubt conclude that these two men were in two completely different places. When in fact, they were in the same place at the very same instant!
Perception explores this breach of experience by glancing into the lives of three individuals: Clarissa, Ralph and Tobias.
After the typical college experience, Clarissa moved to NYC. She quickly became jaded, and in time, working her job as an Administrative Assistant came to compromise her self-respect. She felt as one of the common many--a "sell out." And she quit. Today, she lives as a homeless person on the streets of New York.
Her brother Ralph--a successful real estate salesman--lives on the 20th floor of 59th Street and Central Park South. He both detests and pities Clarissa.
Tobias is a waiter and perpetual student. He has taken night classes for close to ten years, but refuses to take what is required to garner a degree.
Perception journeys through the same month of time from each character's point of view, detailing how presumption and mistaken intention leads to great misunderstanding. A moment, revisited from another point of view, takes new dimension--and protagonist and antagonist change places.
Perception shines a light upon the curtain that isolates us; the fundamental breach in perspective from one individual to the next.

BLINK – SAG SHORT FILM CONTRACT
After countless second chances, Jeff Wilton is abruptly fired from his job with nowhere else to go. Dependence on alcohol and antidepressants forces Jeff to have an altered perception toward his supervisor Sandra Miller which leads to his psychotic behavior and twisted plan for revenge.

Sandra is attractive, Caucasian, and has a genuinely wholesome face. 26-28 years of age, tall, 120lbs. and a toned physique. She wears glasses and conservative clothes and is oblivious to her natural sex appeal. Sandra is a naturally kind and giving woman. Always willing to help close friends in any situation. She's always searching for the love of her life but cannot seem to trust anyone after the untimely death of her best friend and brother Steve. Sandra tries to come across as a career-oriented professional but just might not have what it takes to make it. She feels she has something to prove, to herself, her boss, and her friends and always tries to rise above and mold herself into a strong, independent woman and manager. The 2 drastic types of personalities are seen through her naivete. In public, she is always trying to hold back her tears when put in an uncomfortable situation.

Jeff (26-34) is a psychotic basket-case who should be committed to a mental hospital. Most times, he hallucinates and becomes severely depressed while drinking and downing pills. We never truly know how he's going to behave while on his medication. Always trying to make up excuses and defend himself for his mistakes, he is in constant need of Sandra's approval. Jeff is relatively good-looking, average height and thin; thin the way an alcoholic or drug-user looks. Trying desperately to dress appropriately for work, he manages to look like he just rolled out of bed.
